Hadaka Jime - Naked Choke (Hand - Type)

Shime Waza #4b
Hadaka Jime, when applied properly is a blood choke which works by stopping the blood flow to and from the brain. This can cause the loss of consciousness in as fast as 3 seconds while allowing Uke to breathe normally through the entire process. Most often, this choke is demonstrated as a “wind” choke against the wind-pipe and this is the most frequent application in tournaments.

Begin by having Uke kneel on one knee facing away from you. We will cover the Hand type first followed by the Arm type of Hadaka Jime.

Kneel behind Uke and begin by placing your left hand, palm up on Uke’s left shoulder. Bring your right hand around in front of Uke and grab your left hand so that both palms are together. The fingers of your right hand should clasp on the index finger side of your left hand above the thumb. The elbow of your right arm should be lined up along Uke’s center line in front of the chest so as to provide the appropriate angle for application of the choke. Place the tendon that extends below the thumb and runs down to the wrist on Uke’s neck to the left of the windpipe where the main artery that feeds the brain’s blood supply runs. The spot is the same as where you would check for a pulse on the neck.

With your hands clasped together and the thumb-ridge of your right hand placed over the carotid artery, lower your head forward to just above your hands to immobilize Uke’s head and flex your right wrist so as to press on the carotid artery, closing off the blood supply.

To defend against Hadaka Jime Hand Type, place your tongue against the roof of your mouth and press strongly. This helps to strengthen the neck. Next turn your head towards Uke's bicep where the bend in the elbow is and lower your chin.  Reach up and grab the sleeve of Uke's choking arm.  Pull the arm down and this will create space between your neck and the choke.

Option A:
While reaching up with your hands (based on Uke choking with the right arm), continue to reach up until your right hand can grab inside of Uke's right lapel.  Now, with both hands, pull down strongly creating space to breathe and regain your composure.

Option B:
While reaching up with your hands (based on Uke choking with the right arm), grab high up on Uke's sleeve with your right hand and near the elbow with your left.  Quickly jerk Uke's arm down creating space.  Now tuck your chin strongly and drive Uke's arm up and over your face exiting the choke.

Option C:
Tuck your chin and press it against Uke's forearm trying to create space.  At the same time, reach across your body and pull down on Uke's sleeve.   Now that you have created space, slide your opened right hand up between your neck and Uke's right (choking) arm.   Grab the arm and lock your wrist to allow air and blood flow to continue.
