Sode Guruma Jime - Sleeve Wheel Choke

Shime Waza #8

Sode Guruma Jime, when applied properly is a blood choke which works by stopping the blood flow to and from the brain. This can cause the loss of consciousness in as fast as 3 seconds while allowing Uke to breathe normally through the entire process.

HAND PLACEMENT

Begin by having Uke sit or kneel facing away from you. Step behind Uke and with your left hand, reach over Uke’s right shoulder and grab Uke’s left lapel just below the chin. Give a slight pull as you shift your body back towards Uke’s left. This should create a wrinkle in Uke’s gi about where the collar bone is.

With your right hand, reach over Uke’s left shoulder with your right hand and grab the wrinkle created by the pull of your left hand.

APPLICATION

To apply the choke, tighten your grip on Uke’s gi and extend your elbows outward. Your crossed arms should provide adequate support so that Uke is not able to lean forward to escape the choke and you should not need to slide into Uke’s back to provide additional stability to the choke. To complete the choke, flex your wrists outward as your elbows extend outwards and Uke should soon indicate a surrender by tapping twice.

DEFENSE

In an effort to prevent being choked out, press your tongue strongly against the roof of your mouth to strengthen your neck and slow Tori's attempts to choke you.   As part of your normal defensive movements, note which side the lapel is being pulled and grab with both hands Tori's sleeve.

Option A:
Since Tori's arms are crossed behind your neck in a Juji-style choke, we will focus on the hand pulling on the lapel.   Grabbing that hand with both of your hands, pull it sharply down to create space. Continue to grab higher and higher on the sleeve until Tori's elbow is at your chest. Now you have an arm-bar option and Tori has no choke.

Option B:
Since Tori's arms are crossed behind your neck in a Juji-style choke, we will focus on the hand pulling on the lapel.   Grabbing that hand with both of your hands, pull it sharply down to create space.  Continue to pull on Tori's sleeve until there is enough room to slide it over your head.   As Tori's arm passes over your head, turn into the direction the arm is going so you are now face Tori.

Option C:
Since Tori's arms are crossed behind your neck in a Juji-style choke, we will focus pulling our lapel free.   Grabbing with both hands, grab as close to Tori's hand as possible, your own lapel.   Since Tori is pulling the lapel across your body with a single hand, our focus is to use both hands below Uke's and pull the lapel strongly back across our body, breaking Tori's grip in the process.   As the lapel comes free, turn in the opposite direction to face Tori.
